At the time I was too distressed to be able to put my finger on it, but I was determined to get to the bottom of my Micky’s death. As soon as I got home I phoned my solicitor and, with his help, we put up a big fight with the police. They said my Micky was shot in the stomach but I didn’t believe them. I told them I wanted an independent post mortem – and suddenly they said the body had been accidentally ‘lost’. A few days later, when they knew I wasn’t going to give up, they ‘found’ it again and my post mortem clearly stated that Micky was shot in the back. What was going on? Is that what they were covering up? Afterwards we took Micky home. We wanted him home for the last time so we could say goodbye to him properly. The funeral directors came and laid my Micky out in his coffin in the front room. They told us to turn off all the heating and, during the day, to open the windows. It was very noisy because the council were digging up the road outside and the constant drilling and banging were driving us mad.

Throughout the next couple of days the house seemed full of people, all sorts and some I’d never even met before. They all wanted to pay their respects. All the family was there too, and Maureen, Micky’s sister, decided to stay overnight with me. With all the windows open, the house was freezing cold, but Micky’s mum came to the rescue and brought us a couple of her nightdresses, the old-fashioned ones made out of white winceyette which came right down to the ground. That night, me and Maureen huddled together to keep warm. I closed my eyes and started to drift off when, all of a sudden, I heard a voice call out: ‘Help!’

I sat up and listened. I thought I was dreaming. Then I heard it again: ‘Help!’

I shook Maureen. ‘Wake up, wake up. Micky’s not dead, he’s calling me.’

All bleary-eyed, she kissed me on the forehead and said, ‘Bless your heart, darling, you’re dreaming, go back to sleep.’

‘Yeah, you’re right, I must have been dreaming.’ But as soon as I put my head on the pillow I heard it again: ‘Help!’

This time, Maureen heard it too. She sat bolt upright and said, ‘Fuck me, you’re right.’ We grabbed each other’s hand and started to make our way downstairs. We were scared stiff and when we got outside the front room door, we started to argue about who was going to go in first. ‘He’s your brother,’ I said.

‘Yeah, and he’s your husband,’ she replied.

We crept in quietly and peered into the coffin. Micky was still in there and he was dead all right. Then, again, we heard: ‘Help!’

‘Someone’s having a fucking game with us,’ Maureen said and she ran outside but she couldn’t see anyone.

‘Help!’

She went outside the front gate and looked down into a big hole that the workmen had been digging.
